The Katherine Ultra Challenge is the ULTIMATE adventure race in the Northern Territory. Highlighting the natural beauty of Nitmiluk National Park, the Gorge, and its surrounds, it is a one day multisport event encompassing multiple legs on varying terrain to complete “the Ultimate Test” through the best national park the Territory has to offer. Competitors can enter as individuals or in teams of 2-6 people.
The Katherine Ultra Challenge is an event that encourages competitors of every ability. While some wish to challenge themselves with time goals, many simply wish to have fun at their own pace, allowing them more time to take in the epic surroundings. So get your gear, or your team together and get amongst it!
Over the long weekend and on the day, participants, teams, and spectators have the option to; camp at Nitmiluk; purchase delicious food and refreshments; and enjoy the best the territory has to offer!
Post Event Function / Awards
This year, the presentations will be undertaken at the venue from 4pm. Please hang around as their will be random draw prizes and scrumptious food (in return for small change)

Leg Details
2km Swim
Enjoy a 2-kilometre swim out and back in the majestic Nitmiluk (Second) George. Wetsuits permitted.
4.2km Canoe
After the swim leg, participants will pair up in a double canoe. Pairs will be made up according to the finishing order of the swim – i.e. 1st and 2nd paddle together, 3rd and 4th, etc. – those in a team will begin the paddle once their swimmer has finished. Pairs will paddle out and back together, discovering a little more of the spectacular Nitmiluk (Second) George.
**note – all canoes are supplied by Nitmiluk, no participants are permitted to bring their own canoes
11km Trail Run
After being transported back from the canoe leg, the run will go from the ranger station (in the same order and time increments that you or your team member finished the canoe leg). From the transition area, you will steam up ail) to the top of the cliff face to Pat’s Lookout and travel along the clearly marked path (Waleka) to the awe-inspiring Jeddah’s Rock to then head towards Butterfly Junction. From the Junction, scoot along (Yambi) before flying down (Gurumal Trail) back to transition at the Nitmiluk Ranger Station.
40km Road Bike
From the Nitmiluk Ranger Station, push yourself towards the edge of the Katherine township before turning at Jaensch Road to roll back to the transition area at the Nitmiluk Ranger Station.
18km Mountain Bike
Jump from one bike to another (or use the same), and you will be awe-struck as you ride through the challenging trails that wind their way across the Southern Escarpment before arriving back at the transition area at the Nitmiluk Ranger Station.
10km 4WD Road Run
To top off the epic day, tick your legs over for 10 clicks on an out-and-back 4WD course to reach the finish line to copious cheers and an extremely well earned beverage (cup of water). Please note that this course includes both rocky and sandy sections.
